The Ledger Nano S is one of the best(if not the best) hardware wallets we have right now in the market due to it’s very simplistic and compact design, and it’s support for a good number of coins.
One thing though, that bothers a lot of Ledger Nano S owners is the infuriating “Sorry, not enough storage left” error message. Sometimes even if you only have around 4 coin apps installed(coin app size varies).
Ledger purposely made the device’s memory small for security purposes, so there’s nothing we could do but to use a workaround. So, what’s the solution?
Uninstall the apps you’re not using. Yes. For you to have memory to be able to use other apps, you need to temporarily uninstall apps that you’re not using.
You only need the apps if you’re going to transact. You can still freely view your portfolio on Ledger Live even if all the apps are uninstalled.
Will I lose my coins if I uninstall an app?
No. Uninstalling an app isn’t going to lose you access to your coins. You can freely uninstall every single apps on your Ledger wallet, and reinstall them again later, gaining you back access to your coins if you’re planning on doing some transactions.
How do I uninstall an app?
- Open Ledger Live with your Ledger Nano S plugged in to your computer
- Select “Manager” on the Menu sidebar
- Simply click on the trash icons of the apps you want to uninstall
Is this the only solution?
On the 1.4.1 version update of the Ledger Nano S firmware, the developers of Ledger did some optimizations to the apps to potentially decrease their memory size. Though they claim that you could now install up to 18 apps, it still completely depends on what apps you’re actually installing, as some apps take significantly more memory compared to others. Potentially significantly lowering the amount of apps you can install, some even as low as 5 apps.
For now, if you’re on the latest version and you’re having memory problems, I’m afraid uninstalling some of the is the only solution for now. Let’s just hope for better app optimizations from Ledger in the future.
Also, Ledger just recently released the Ledger Nano X, a new hardware wallet with bluetooth functionality, mobile support, and finally, with bigger memory space, capable of supporting hundreds of apps(no more memory issues! yay!).
